What Ink Do We Use On Fabric? (And Why You Can Totally Trust It)

One of the questions I get asked a lot is:

“Will the ink wash off?”

“Is it safe to use on everyday items like totes or pouches?”

The short answer is: Yes — the ink I use is safe, long-lasting, and carefully chosen.

The longer answer? Let’s dive into a little behind-the-scenes of Tako Press ink.

Please note that all processed will be constantly revised and improved at Tako Press, the information below is up to date as of June 2025.

At Tako Press, I use two main types of ink

Every design, every fabric, and every purpose calls for the right kind of ink. I choose based on how it feels on the surface, how it performs, and how well it lasts — because I want each piece to be beautiful, functional, and safe to use every day.

1. Screenprinting Ink – for simple, bold motifs

Even though it’s made for screen printing, I use this for cleaner, simpler prints with 1–2 colors due to its fast drying nature. This ink rolls on smoothly, gives a solid look, and when heat-set properly, becomes washable and fade-resistant.

→ I use Speedball Fabric Screen Printing Ink (Made in USA)

  • Non-toxic, safe for skin
  • Soft feel on fabric
  • Water-based but permanent when heat-set

2. Fabric Block Printing Ink – for intricate hand-carved designs

For the more detailed pieces — those with thin lines and lots of textures— I turn to a specialty ink made for block printing on fabric. It’s thicker, holds fine lines well, and still feels soft once cured.

→ I use Speedball Fabric Block Printing Ink (oil-based)

  • Safe and non-toxic
  • Designed for fabric (t-shirts, totes, cloth goods)
  • Machine-washable (gentle cycle or hand-wash after dried)

Once fully dried and heat-set, both inks hold up to everyday use and gentle washing — no cracking, no flaking.

How long does the ink last?

If you treat your Tako Press piece like you would your favorite cotton tee — wash it gently, avoid harsh scrubbing on the print, and let it air dry in the shade — it’ll stay with you for years.

People often ask: “Is this just for decoration?”

And I always say: Tako Press is made for everyday life — not to sit in a drawer.

Still wondering?

I totally get it — when you buy something handmade, you want to know it’ll last.

That’s why I only use inks I trust — ones that are safe, high-quality, and last as long as it’s given care to.

Thanks for caring about the details. I believe the more you know about what you’re holding, the more you’ll love it.
